Seedream 4.5 review — the fast image model that grew up

Seedream started life as a speedy sketch tool. Version 4.5 quietly closed most of the quality gap with the flagship models — and it still ships in under three seconds.

01

The speed story

Seedream 4.5 returns a 1024×1024 image in roughly 2.5 seconds on aggregator infrastructure. Flux 2 Pro takes 8-12. For iterative work — twenty rolls to find the composition — that difference compounds into a completely different creative rhythm.

02

Where quality now matches

Product photography, editorial portraits with soft light, food, architectural interiors — Seedream 4.5 lands in blind tests as often as Flux for these categories. Twelve months ago that would have been an outlandish claim.

03

Where it still trails

High-contrast dramatic lighting, complex hand poses, and multi-subject scenes with clear spatial relationships — Flux 2 Pro is still stronger. Seedream also has a slight tendency toward warmer default colour, which either helps or hurts depending on brief.

04

Seedream 4.5 Edit

The edit variant is the surprise of 2026. Instruction following for object replacement and background swap is competitive with Nano Banana 2 Edit while being roughly half the price. For high-volume ecommerce touch-up, this is the current cost leader.

05

The workflow that unlocks it

Use Seedream 4.5 as your draft and iterate loop. Once you have a locked composition, either ship it as-is (increasingly viable) or re-roll the winning prompt on Flux 2 Pro for the final master. Best of both.
